A note from Eric Friesen

Prior to the finale of Studio Sparks on the old Radio 2, I sent a small note of thanks to Eric Friesen in appreciation of his wonderful program, that was my afternoon companion for several years. In the mail the other day came a lovely note back from Eric. I was very touched to receive it, from this true gentleman. I now have it up on my studio wall as a memento of a great radio host and a great radio program. Thanks Eric for all the great hours of music, commentary, interview and concert. It was great while it lasted!

  1. One of the bonuses of living in Detroit, until just recently, was to be able to listen to CBC. But after being out of the area from September until this week (today is 10/17) I returned to discover that Eric Friesen has been replaced by a show that should be called Music for Dummies. The hostess makes me gag. She sounds like a bimbo reject from MTV. What a sad state of affairs, compounded, apparently, by the loss of Disc Drive and Jurgen Gothe.

  2. I live in the Detroit area and for many years have considered having the CBC—both radio and TV—a real bonus. I was so fond of CBC that I once tried to donate money to it but my offer was rejected! In retirement I’ve spent hours daily listening to CBC radio 2 and have particularly enjoyed Eric Friesen’s wonderful programs of music, his comments, and the superb interviews he conducted with musicians. What better way to spend the afternoon than to listen to Studio Sparks, for example, and then segue into Disk Drive with Jurgen Gothe while preparing supper? On returning from a protracted summer vacation in Colorado I discovered that CBC had changed drastically in ways not particularly to my tastes, and I hope that Eric and any others I so enjoyed who are no longer part of CBC will enjoy their well-earned meed of repose.

  3. I am still going through withdrawal I’m afraid. I have switched to Espace Musique, the French CBC fm, which plays a great mix of music. I am brushing up on my French at the same time! Yes, the wonderful days of great CBC seem to be done. Other than the classical section midday, which is okay, the rest is much like any fm station, which never really interested me to begin with. Well, I still have to explore the web world, but I can’t just tune in like before and hear it anywhere in my house. Unless of course I buy more techie equipment. Heartfelt sigh!

  4. Just like Lorraine, I have also switched to the French Espace Musique. I don’t understand any French, but at least I can stomach their broadcasted music better than I can stomach CBC radio 2 now. I may not understand the words, but at least the music speaks to me.
